World Bank to give Sh5.8bn for education 

The World Bank has approved a Sh5.8 billion loan to the Government for the
education sector. Citing measures taken by the Narc administration to fight
corruption, the bank decided to release the delayed loan to finance
education programmes.

NYS keeps abreast with change 

Reforms within the various government institutions initiated about three
years ago have caught up with the national youth service. Besides training

The plight of education standards in the larger Gusii land has touched a
group of lawyers in the area to the nerve.Even with the Free Primary

Schools mark environmental conservation, science day


MUSANZE - Karisoke Research Centre, last week held environmental
conservation and Science day seminars in six secondary schools in the
Province. The activities to mark the day involved training students to make
energy-saving cooking stoves for community residents and discussions of

Exams begin                                         

The 2006 Advanced and Ordinary Level exams start today, with the number of
candidates increasing from 28,125 to 36,430 and, 35,023 to 46,559,
respectively. According to John Rutayisire, the Executive Secretary of the
Rwanda National Examination Council, the number of private candidates (A'
Level) also increased from 7,269 to 8,962.

KIWI donates shoes to Kicukiro pupils                                     

KIWI, a shoe polish manufacturing company, recently donated 1000 pairs of
shoes to pupils of primary five and six of Ecole Primaire de Kicukiro
(E.P.K). This gesture was part of the company's celebrations to mark 100
years of global existence.

666,000 candidates sit KCPE exam today 

This year's Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) examinations will
start in more than 18,000 centres this morning. Fiona Nyanyan'ga, a Kenya

TEACHING in local languages in primary schools starts in February 2007. The
education and sports ministry has announced that it will implement a
Thematic Curriculum in lower primary from P.1 to P.3 using local languages
as a medium of instruction.

East seeks students' year-end holiday work


RWAMAGANA - University and other students in the province may have a
different end-of-year holiday if recommendations of a security meeting are
adopted. While attending a security meeting at Dereva hotel, Rwamagana, on

students in vacation should be engaged in community activities.

Kenya given biggest share of Aids cash 

Kenya has received the largest share of money to finance Aids programmes
from the Global Fund this year. With the signing of a Sh5 billion grant
agreement between the Government and the fund, the country has received 29
per cent of the total amount approved to support HIV programmes worldwide in
the second phase now being disbursed, Finance minister Amos Kimunya has
said.

Global Fund cuts Uganda's HIV/AIDS funding    

UGANDA has missed out on the sixth round of the Global Funds money for
fighting HIV/AIDS and malaria. It has, however, been given $10.7m for
fighting tuberclosis (TB), according to the final list of approved proposals
on the global fund website.

Global Fund approves $67m for HIV, TB


 Global Fund International has approved $67m (Frw361.8bn) project proposals
for Rwanda to control HIV/Aids and Tuberculosis (TB). According to sources,
the approval follows the submission of three project proposals worth $76m

Fight Aids in tertiary institutions -KIE Rector


The Rector of Kigali Institute of Education (KIE), Emmanuel Mudidi, has
called for concerted efforts to combat HIV/Aids in institutions of higher
learning and the communities around them.

Mudidi made the appeal November 3, during a one-day workshop to launch a
strategy to fight HIV/Aids in KIE and its surrounding community.
