Donors Must Spend More on Universal Education
Countries should spend 4 to 6 per cent of national income on education, and
donors need to raise predictable and long-term financing to reach the $11
billion required annually to achieve universal primary education, adult
literacy and early childhood care and education by 2015, a United
Nations-led conference has determined.

Africa: HP, UNESCO Launch Joint Project to Counter Brain Drain
Hewlett Packard (HP) and UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural
Organisation (UNESCO) on Monday announced the launch of a new project
"Piloting Solutions for Reversing Brain Drain into Brain Gain for Africa",
which aims to help to reduce brain drain in Africa by providing grid
computing technology to universities in Algeria, Ghana, Nigeria, Senegal and
Zimbabwe.

British Council links schools

Community library opens in Edaga-Hamus
Asmara, 20 November 2006 - A community library has opened in Edaga-Hamus
zone of the capital at a cost of 1.2 million Nakfa. The library with 6,000
books could serve 750 people at a given time and render 14-hour service. 10
computers with internet access are also made available at the library.

Murang'a tops college exams
Central Province's Murang'a College has emerged top in national teacher

Defying customs to save lives
A group of Muslim women in the dusty town of Lodwar, are breaking with
tradition to speak openly about HIV/AIDS and other sexually transmitted
diseases. As in many Muslim societies, the people of Lodwar, in the district
of Turkana, have a deep-seated aversion to discussing sexual matters, but
the reality of the epidemic has forced them to educate themselves about it.
