Free nursery education planned from next year 

The Government is planning to offer free nursery education across the
country. Vice-President, Mr Moody Awori, said free early childhood education
could be implemented as early as next year when schools reopen after
Christmas.

When Veronique Deneen of Mama Mzungu Foundation (MMF) engaged Francis

The story of Great Lakes University (GLUK) starts with a unique success

After-school activities boost a child's exam performance

IT has now been proved. Allow children to relax. A new research into young
people's lifestyles has shown that children who take part in after-school
activities such as drama and football get better exam results, have a
stronger relationship with their parents and are less likely to smoke or
drink than those who do not.

Finally, NUR Graduation for December

The long awaited graduation for the National University of Rwanda (NUR) has
finally been scheduled for December 9, with 1,500 students expected to

O' level exams start well in north         

Ordinary Level Examinations yesterday started well and peacefully in the war
torn northern Uganda. The exams in Gulu, Kitgum, Pader, Dokolo, Amuru, Oyam,
Lira and Apac districts started as expected without any major problems
reported.

Burundi: Belgium Grants 10 Million Euros

Belgium has granted Burundi 10 million euros (US $12.5 million) for
education, road construction and rural water supply, as promised during a
donors' conference earlier this year.

Kenya: 308 State Scholarships for Studies Overseas

The Government has given overseas scholarships to 308 students in the past
three years.

The scholarships include 35 for doctorate studies, 72 for masters and 201
for undergraduate studies, said assistant minister for Education Kilemi
Mwiria.

Uganda: Let's Study Stigma No More

Increasing discrimination against teachers infected with HIV, the virus that
causes Aids, in Uganda is a reversal of victories registered against the
disease.

A teacher discussing this development with The East African recently, summed
up the gravity of the matter, "Sometimes teachers who die as a result of
HIV/Aids do not get their terminal benefits. Can you tell me why?"

Ethiopia: Over 2.5 Mln. Birr Preparatory School, Health Station Go
Operational

A preparatory school and a health station constructed at a cost of over 2.5
million birr in Kobo Woreda, North Wollo Zone of Amhara State have gone
operational the Zonal Information Office said quoting Kobo Secondary School
Deputy Director and Woreda Health Office Head Taye Ashebor and Amde Ararse
respectively.

Street children get skills


About forty former street children picked from Ruhengeri town received
certificates and tools on Wednesday October 18, after completing training in
different technical activities. The children completed training in
tailoring, carpentry, welding, and motor mechanics courtesy of caritas
Ruhengeri dioceses.
