New guidelines for degree courses out 

New admission guidelines for degree courses in public universities have been
released. 

The guidelines, dated last month, will be applied next year for candidates
who begin their Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education exams (KCSE) today.

Hotline set up for public to report exam cheating

Cases of cheating will be reported instantly through a telephone hotline
established at Education ministry headquarters..Permanent secretary Karega
Mutahi has asked all examination officials to immediately report
irregularities through telephone number 020-248124.

Radical changes as KCSE exams begin 

Radical changes have been introduced in the secondary school examinations
that begin countrywide today. Candidate at Masai Girls School in Ngong wait
for the start of KCSE rehearsals last Thursday. The Form Four examinations
begin today.

Sh26.5b school exchange programme launched 

The British Council has launched a Sh26.5 billion school partnership
project. 

Thirty-three schools will benefit from the project, whose aim is to create
positive image for Africa in Western countries.

Stop taxing private schools -Museveni 

PRESIDENT Yoweri Museveni has asked the Ministry of Finance to stop imposing
direct taxes on private schools.

"These taxes must stop. Sometimes we tell the Ministry of Finance not to do
certain things but they don't follow," Museveni said.

Ezana Ethiopia Launches Two Projects

Ezana Ethiopia Mahiber, a local NGO, officially launched on Thursday Tiruzer

Woldiya - Education service coverage in North Wollo Zone of Amhara State has

Mobile laboratories used in UNEB exams           

MOBILE laboratories were created in most schools for science practical
O'level examinations. The secretary of the uganda National examination Board
(UNEB), Matthew Bukenya, said this was the first time that all O'level
candidates were being examined in all science subjects.

Win millions in Design An Ad competition         

MILLIONS of shillings is to be won in The New Vision 'Design An Advert'
annual Christmas Children's contest that started Saturday.  The contest ends
December 2, where a grand prize of sh300,000 will be given to the best

sh150,000 and sh100,000 respectively.

Training for head teachers to spruce up management skills

The introduction of free primary education in 2003 thrust primary school
head teachers into a role that their training had not prepared them for.

Apart from their duties as heads of academic institutions, now they are
required to be managers, accountants and auditors and to perform a
multiplicity of other functions.

Training has helped us become better managers, teachers say 

Unlike managers in the private sector, secondary school principals could go
up to a year without undergoing induction training after they are appointed.
Now this is all changing. Now many are being trained at the Kenya Education
Staff Institute (KESI) mainly on administration, finance and management.

Uganda: Why We Need Free High Schooling

President Yoweri Museveni's 2006 manifesto highlights the Nationala
Resistance Movement (NRM) mission to transform Uganda from a poor peasant
society to a modern, industrial and prosperous one. This is only achievable
by having an educated population because it's the latter that will improve
the quality of life.

Rwanda: 25000 to Register for Adult Education

The Adventist Development Religious Agency (ADRA) is to assist in the
enrollment of over 25,000 school drop outs in Nyagatare District, for adult
education programmes to enable them sit for primary living examinations
within a period of three years.

Completing primary level now compulsory       

COMPLETING primary school education will now be compulsory for all pupils
countrywide, Education Minister Namirembe Bitamazire said on Tuesday. 

This means pupils who join primary one will be compelled to study up to
primary seven when they sit for the Primary Leaving Examination.

WHO calls for drugs tax waiver
