EFA News - # 11 - JUST PUBLISHED

EFA News is published every few months by the UNESCO Nairobi Office to
provide a forum for newsworthy information on EFA activities in the cluster
countries as well as other parts of Africa.




Pushing EFA campaigns to new heights

Implementation of universal primary education (UPE) in nearly all countries
in the UNESCO Nairobi Cluster, except Somalia, is clearly bearing fruit.
Enrolments have risen quite considerably in the countries - Eritrea,
Burundi, Kenya, Rwanda and Uganda - putting them in a better stead of
realising the Education For All (EFA) goal on access. Several lessons have
been learnt through the implementation of UPE, chief among them being that
political will is vital in realising EFA goals.

 


Considering the way in which UPE or free primary education was introduced
among the cluster countries, it was purely out of a political commitment by
the national leadership and the result has been quite impressive. Reports by
EFA Coordinators from the cluster countries, which are published in this
newsletter, demonstrate that several gains have been made in expanding
primary education by abolishing fees and providing children with learning
and teaching materials in schools.
