"THE MISSING 10 PER CENT - HIV/AIDS IN THE EDUCATION SUB-SECTOR IN
SUB-SAHARAN AFRICA".
African Population and Health Research Institute (APHRC) hosted a one-day
symposium on 27 November 2007 that was supported by the Ford Foundation on
behalf of the UNAIDS Inter-Agency Task Team (IATT) on Education. Since the
early 1990s, the interaction of HIV and AIDS and education in sub-Saharan
Africa has concerned researchers, policymakers, and civil society. HIV and
AIDS and education interact in many ways. HIV and AIDS have led to massive
reductions in the demand for and supply of education, reductions in the
availability of resources, adjustments in responses to the special needs of
a rapidly increasing number of orphans, and alterations in the roles of
teachers and the education system. This symposium aimed to clarify some of
the critical ways in which the pandemic has interacted with the education
sector in sub-Saharan Africa.

TEACHERS LIVING WITH HIV AND AIDS
Teachers living with HIV and AIDS told their provoking stories of the
challenges and obstacles they face especially the stigma and discrimination
and of the failure to provide institutional confidential kits. Insights from
the technical consultation organization by UNESCO and Educational
International from 30 November to 1 December 2006 give hope that Teachers'
Unions, networks of positive teachers, Ministries of Education are moving.
Education International and its EFAIDS partners - Education Development
Centre and the World Health Organization have developed a toolkit to help
education and their unions to involve education who are living with HIV.

financial resources for the AIDS response in the time to come. I pledge
UNESCO's firm commitment to fulfilling its role [of leadership] in the
