Rwanda

UNDP backs govt, UNESCO coupon venture
The UN Development Programme has pledged to support a newly launched UNESCO
coupons business deal in Rwanda . The use of coupons in procurement of
scholastic and other related items from foreign manufacturers will be
administered by the National Commission for Unesco in liaison with the UNDP.

Strengthening education in Rwanda
The African continent can hardly be described as that with a stable economy.
Much of the African continent remains under-developed and poverty-stricken.
Civil wars and famine are predominant and universal basic education a dream
yet to be realised.

Students need competition to perform well
There is a common adage; "There is always room at the top of the ladder."
This means that whoever wishes to leave the crowd and its stuffiness should
aim for the top, where many benefits await the victor. But this can only be
realised if really there are any benefits to fight for. Mankind's progress
is always influenced by competition. Therefore, for us to achieve many
things, competition needs to be created.

Uganda

Government finds more money for USE
THE Government will provide an additional sh18b for Universal Secondary
Education (USE) in the next financial year. This was announced by the
Commissioner for Education Planning, Arnold Dhatemwa.

A KYAMBOGO University Engineering student has invented a water pump. Setting
up one is cheaper than a borehole. Patrick Kigozi, a fourth year student,
said the rope-water-pump innovation is appropriate for rural and
densely-populated areas.

WOMEN Prisoners' Support Organisation (WPSO), a non-governmental
organisation, together with Irish Aid, has established a functional literacy
and skills training programme for prisoners in Jinja main prison.

Ministry of Education releases USE funds for private schools
UNIVERSAL secondary education (USE) funds for private schools have been
released. The Permanent Secretary of the ministry of education, Francis
Lubanga, says the funds are for the first and second terms.
