Rwanda
FARG students to be paid directly
KIGALI - The Program coordinator for the Fund for Genocide Survivors-FARG,
has welcomed the move by the Ministry of Local Government to change the
procedures of paying for students who benefit from the program. The ministry
is set to begin paying students sponsored by the fund directly so that they
can in turn pay their tuition fees and be responsible for their upkeep.

Uganda
Makerere okays some MUBS courses
MAKERERE University has finally recognised the over 1,500 students who were
last year admitted on unaccredited courses at its affiliate college. The
approval follows an appeal by the MUBS principal, Prof. Wasswa Balunywa, to
Parliament, asking it to rescue the "stranded" students.

Four universities set for Lango region
LANGO will soon become an education hub, with four private universities
expected to be operational soon. The universities are All Saints Lango, Lira
Integrated, Won Nyaci Royal and Lira, which will be a branch of Gulu
University.

Makerere given sh4b for health research
MAKERERE University and a Belgian university will receive a 1.5m euro (about
sh4b) grant from the Belgian government for research and training to improve
health services in Uganda.

Ex-abductees get new learning centres
WORLD Vision through its Uganda children of war rehabilitation programme has
funded the construction of six learning centres in Gulu and Amuru districts.

CELTEL Uganda is giving out 16,000 textbooks worth sh200m to 80 primary
schools.

Rotary aids university
The Aga Khan Education Services has given a grant of sh1.2m to Kampala and
Wakiso districts. Through its Universal Primary Education Committee (EUPEC)
project, the Foundation said the money was to promote education in the two
districts. Handing over the cheque to mayor Nasser Sebaggala at the City
Council chambers last week, the EUPEC director, Lawrence Kanyike, said the
money would especially help the disadvantaged schools.

CISCO changes curriculum
CISCO, a computer networking company, has changed its curriculum,
introducing more security-oriented courses. The CISCO networking academy
manager, Hital Muraj, said the company would emphasise rigorous lessons in
wireless communication and security technology.
