FARG students to be paid directly 
KIGALI - The Program coordinator for the Fund for Genocide Survivors-FARG,
has welcomed the move by the Ministry of Local Government to change the
procedures of paying for students who benefit from the program. The ministry
is set to begin paying students sponsored by the fund directly so that they
can in turn pay their tuition fees and be responsible for their upkeep.

Rwanda goes a mile-stone in improving education after the genocide
Rwanda's education system, which comprises four various levels of education;
nursery (kindergarten), primary, secondary, and higher institution of
learning, has improved remarkably in recent years after a steep decline due
to the 1994 genocide. Today the gross primary school enrollment ratio
exceeds 100 percent.

Makerere okays some MUBS courses 
MAKERERE University has finally recognised the over 1,500 students who were
last year admitted on unaccredited courses at its affiliate college. The
approval follows an appeal by the MUBS principal, Prof. Wasswa Balunywa, to
Parliament, asking it to rescue the "stranded" students.

Four universities set for Lango region
LANGO will soon become an education hub, with four private universities
expected to be operational soon. The universities are All Saints Lango, Lira
Integrated, Won Nyaci Royal and Lira, which will be a branch of Gulu

Rotary aids university
The Aga Khan Education Services has given a grant of sh1.2m to Kampala and
Wakiso districts. Through its Universal Primary Education Committee (EUPEC)
project, the Foundation said the money was to promote education in the two
districts. Handing over the cheque to mayor Nasser Sebaggala at the City
Council chambers last week, the EUPEC director, Lawrence Kanyike, said the
money would especially help the disadvantaged schools.

CISCO changes curriculum
CISCO, a computer networking company, has changed its curriculum,
introducing more security-oriented courses. The CISCO networking academy

Americans study Luganda at Makerere
FOURTEEN American students from the Northwestern University of Chicago are
studying Luganda as one of the interdisciplinary courses for the 10 weeks
they will spend in Uganda. Other courses are Public Health, contemporary

The University of Manchester in the UK is offering eight scholarships to
capable Ugandans wishing to pursue studies at Post-graduate level but may
not have the means to realise their dreams. The scholarships, managed on
behalf of the University by KULIKA Uganda, a registered not-for-profit
organisation with over 25 years experience in managing scholarships, cover
full tuition fees, return international airfares and living expenses.

Help HIV-positive school children
HIV-POSITIVE students need special attention. Research shows that 12,000
children in Gulu and Amuru districts are HIV-positive, a very worrying
trend. One, they face high chances of infection from older people who offer
them trivial gifts.
