Education for sustainable development on the move 

 





Consultative meetings on Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) take
place in Dakar, Senegal, from 20-24 February 2008 at the UNESCO Regional
Bureau for Education in Africa. UNESCO will engage with ESD stakeholders
including government, NGOs, private sector and development partners on
regional priorities and strategies for delivery ESD.

UNESCO’s IIEP Advanced Training Programme in Educational Planning and
Management -- 
1 September 2008 to 30 June 2009




Master's level training is geared to those working in Ministries and
government organizations in charge of education; training and research
institutes and university departments involved in educational planning and
management; NGOs working in education; International and Bilateral
Organizations.

Focus on multilingual education in Nairobi 

 





Summer Institute of Linguistics -- SIL -  joined UNESCO in 

Nairobi on 6 February 2008 in the spirit of the International Year of
Languages.  Some 16 local and international NGO’s and institutions and
representatives from various universities came together to form a working
group on multilingual education. Participants shared research and programme
activities and committed to building a network of researchers and
practitioners.

Eritrea joins UNESCO’s Literacy Initiative for Empowerment 

 





Eritrea has joined LIFE - UNESCO’s Literacy’s Initiative for Empowerment. An
regional LIFE meeting took place in Maputo, Mozambique, from 29 to 30
January 2008. Some 17 African countries involved in LIFE participated –
Benin, Burkina Faso, Central African Republic, Chad, Democratic Republic of
Congo, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Gambia, Guinea-Bissau, Madagascar, Mali,
Mozambique, Niger, Nigeria, Senegal, Sierra Leone and Sudan. Also invited
were Brazil and Haiti in an effort to promote South-South cooperation. Other
participants come from UNESCO Field Offices, UNESCO Institute of Lifelong
Learning (UIL) and international organizations.

In 2003, 1.1 million households in the United States educated their children
at home. Parents choose to educate their children at home for many reasons,
and many parents believe their kids get a better education at home than they
could have in a public school.

Tumusiime takes Afro-Asian book council office
National Book Trust of Uganda (NABOTU) chairman James Tumusiime (right)
makes his acceptance speech after being elected chairman of the Afro-Asian
Book Council in New Delhi, India, last week. He holds the office for two
years. Tumusiime takes over from Najam Sethi of Pakistan.

Busoga in reading scheme 
Busoga Kingdom has launched a campaign to promote a reading culture among
residents, the premier, Wasswa Balunywa, has said. Projects to be
implemented in the education system transformation programme is
establishment of public libraries and resources centres with Internet
connection, where the local people will gain easy access to services.

Rotary aids Muteesa I
The Rotary Club of Beaverton, USA and the Rotary Club of Gaba have donated
educational materials worth over sh50m to Muteesa I University. The items,
including textbooks, 30 computers, printers and library shelves, were
delivered at the university campus at Kakeeka, Mengo recently. The Gaba club
president Timothy Serunjogi Kyasanku delivered the materials.

IUIU opens female-only campus
THE Islamic University in Uganda (IUIU) has opened a campus in Kampala
exclusively for females, on the eve of celebrating 20 years of its existence

Religious leaders in AIDS fight
RELIGIOUS leaders living with HIV/AIDS have pledged to fight the scourge and
sensitise the public against stigmatisation. Under their umbrella
organisation, the Uganda Network of Religious Leaders Living With or
Affected by HIV/AIDS, they vowed to fight stigma, shame, denial and
discrimination associated with the disease.

USAID supports Ankole HIV project
THE United States Agency for International Development (USAID), through the
Inter-religious Council of Uganda, has donated materials worth sh174m to
Ankole Diocese to reduce the spread of HIV/AIDS.
